LOWA, Meindl or Salomon: Which Hiking Shoes Are Right for Your Eifel Adventure?
Which hiking shoes are right for your tour in the Eifel? A comparison of LOWA, Meindl and Salomon, with tips on hiking, trekking, fit and choosing the right footwear.
The right hiking shoes for the Eifel are not about the logo on the tongue. What matters more is your planned route, the terrain, the duration of your hike — and, of course, how well a particular model fits your foot.
Hiking in the Eifel can look very different: wide forest paths and relaxed family hikes are just as common as rocky sections, climbs, wet roots and more demanding terrain.
That’s why you should start by asking yourself one simple question when choosing hiking shoes:
Where and how do you want to hike?
LOWA, Meindl and Salomon each offer different models for different types of use. We’ll show you what to look for when choosing hiking shoes and which type of footwear could suit your hikes in the Eifel.
LOWA: Versatile hiking shoes for classic tours
LOWA is particularly interesting if you value a combination of stability, comfort and protection in your hiking shoes.
The brand offers models for easy day hikes and moderate tours as well as more robust trekking shoes for longer and more demanding routes. So even with LOWA, the right shoe depends heavily on how you plan to use it.
For a typical hike in the Eifel, a versatile model with moderate stability can be a good choice — for example, if you’re spending several hours on forest, natural and gravel paths.
LOWA could be a good choice for you if you value:
- good support and secure foot guidance,
- stability on uneven terrain,
- high comfort on longer hikes,
- good protection in wet conditions, depending on the model,
- versatility across different types of routes.
If you regularly hike in the Eifel but aren’t planning an alpine expedition every time, you probably don’t need an especially heavy or stiff trekking shoe.
As much stability as you need — but no more than necessary.
Meindl: When you’re looking for more support and stability
Meindl also offers a very broad range of hiking and trekking shoes. One practical feature is the way the shoes are categorized according to different areas of use.
The range includes lighter models for everyday use, leisure and easier hikes, as well as hiking shoes and more robust trekking models for demanding terrain.
For many classic hikes in the Eifel, lighter hiking models can be an interesting option.
If, on the other hand, you’re planning longer tours with a backpack or regularly hike on rocky, demanding terrain with significant elevation changes, a more stable trekking shoe can make sense.
However, keep one thing in mind:
Don’t buy an especially stiff and heavy hiking shoe just because it looks particularly robust.
For a two-hour family hike, heavy trekking shoes are often unnecessary and can even reduce walking comfort.
The stability of a shoe should always match how you actually plan to use it.
Salomon: A lightweight and sporty feel
Many Salomon models appeal to hikers who prefer a lighter, more athletic feel.
If classic hiking or trekking boots feel too bulky for you, lightweight hiking models can be an interesting alternative.
Salomon hiking shoes can be a good option for:
- short and medium-length hikes,
- active hiking,
- well-maintained forest and natural paths,
- hikers who prefer a more athletic fit,
- anyone who values lower shoe weight.
If your typical routes mainly take you through forests, over gravel and paved or dry natural paths, with only moderate elevation changes, a lightweight hiking shoe may be perfectly sufficient.
Again, though, it’s not the brand name that decides. The specific model, intended use and fit are what matter.
Which hiking shoes are suitable for the Eifel?
Not every hike places the same demands on your footwear. As a first guide, you can consider the type and length of your planned tour:
For 1–2 hour walks, a lightweight hiking or multifunctional shoe is usually enough.
For family hikes, a lightweight, flexible shoe with good grip is a good choice.
For 3–5 hour hikes, hiking or mid-cut models are a good option as they provide more comfort and support.
On rocky and uneven trails, look for a stable sole, good support and secure foot guidance.
For long hikes with a backpack, a more stable hiking or trekking shoe is recommended.
On wet trails, depending on the weather, water-resistant or waterproof models with good grip can be useful.
In summer and high temperatures, lighter and more breathable models are particularly comfortable.
This classification is, of course, only a guide. Your body weight, experience, gait and the individual characteristics of your feet can also influence which shoe feels comfortable for you.
Two examples from the Eifel
Two hikes from our region show just how different the requirements can be.
The Stausee-Prümtalroute near Biersdorf am See is around 17 kilometers long and includes approximately 582 meters of elevation gain. On a multi-hour tour like this, comfort, grip and sufficient stability are much more important than they would be on a short walk.
The Kleine-Prüm-Schleife near Wißmannsdorf, on the other hand, is a short and easy loop that partly follows the Prüm River. For a hike like this, heavy trekking shoes are simply not necessary for most hikers.
That’s exactly why there is no single perfect hiking shoe for the entire Eifel.
LOWA, Meindl or Salomon — which brand is best?
Our answer at Sport Giese:
Don’t choose your hiking shoes based on the brand alone.
LOWA, Meindl and Salomon offer different categories, constructions and fits. A high-quality hiking shoe can be technically excellent and still not be right for your foot.
A shoe that is too wide or too narrow, too short, or doesn’t hold your heel securely won’t become the ideal companion — even on the most beautiful hiking trail.
When trying on hiking shoes, you should therefore pay attention to:
- Foot length
- Foot width
- Foot volume
- Secure heel hold
- Your hiking socks
- The type of hikes you’re planning
- The duration of your tours
- The season and weather conditions
Before a longer hike, also give yourself enough time to get used to and break in new hiking shoes. This helps you identify pressure points or other issues early on.
Choosing the right hiking shoes in Bitburg and Prüm
If you live in Bitburg, Prüm or the surrounding area and are looking for the right hiking shoes for your next Eifel adventure, you don’t have to rely solely on size charts and online product descriptions.
At Sport Giese, we offer personal advice and a free 3D foot analysis.
We consider not only your foot length, but also your foot width, shape and other factors that can play a role in finding the right shoe.
Together, we’ll also look at what you actually need your shoes for: relaxed walks, family hikes, longer tours through the Eifel or more demanding routes with significant elevation gain.
This allows us to specifically look for a hiking shoe that suits your feet and your routes — regardless of whether LOWA, Meindl, Salomon or another brand ultimately turns out to be the best choice for you.
Because the best hiking shoe isn’t necessarily the heaviest, most expensive or most technical one.
The best hiking shoe is the one you still feel comfortable in after many kilometers.
